Early January isn’t usually the best time of year to visit Mt. Ausangate and its surrounding mountains, but sometimes you just take what you can get. The Peru Biking guides did just that. We’ve been itching to explore some of Mt. Ausangate’s freerides for a couple of years now, and the time finally came.
Now, you can’t exactly shuttle to the top of these mountains and drop in. That would be too easy and far less rewarding. To earn a virgin freeride next to a glacial peak, there’s only one way: step by step – the definition of hike-a-bike. Make no mistake, hike-a-bike to freeride isn’t for everybody. It takes the rare rider who gets that five-year-old Christmas morning feeling at the top of the mountain before ripping in to a neatly packed box with colorful bow – the virgin freeride.
