One descent, but a big one

Our vehicle drives up from Calca to the Amparaes Pass, at 4,500 m, on the roof of the valley. Reaching the trailhead means carrying your bike for a short while, and that small effort opens one of the most beautiful rides in the whole Sacred Valley: open sandy slopes made for freeride, endless pre-Hispanic singletrack and a horizon of huge mountains and glaciers in every direction.

The ride

Freeride on the sandy slopes of the Amparaes trail, Sacred Valley
Amparaes Pass – Calca

Pure speed, from the puna to the valley forest

After the pass it is pure speed: flowing sections, a few technical bits and terrain that changes as you drop — from treeless puna to dense vegetation and valley forest — until you roll into the village of Calca, at 2,800 m.

This is the most remote of our intermediate days: between the pass and Calca there are no villages with services, only herds of llamas and alpacas, scattered communities and pure high-Andean scenery.

The hike-a-bike to the high point takes about 30 minutes, up to around 4,650 m. Come acclimatised with two or three nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.
